Things to do in Royal Chapel of Granada
The Royal Chapel of Granada (Capilla Real de Granada) is one of the most important places of interest in the city. Located inside the Cathedral of Santa María de la Encarnación, the chapel houses the mortal remains of Catholic Monarchs. Queen Isabella I and King Ferdinand ordered its construction in 1504 and it was built between 1505 and 1517 in Isabelline Gothic style under the direction of Enrique Egas.
The main altarpiece is considered one of the first plateresque altarpieces in Spain and its iconography is structured around three main thematic axes: religious, political and territorial unity. Also noteworthy is the Main Grille, the work of the master Bartolomé, and the Renaissance bars that close the chapels of Santa Cruz and San Ildefonso.
One of the most popular places during guided tours of the Royal Chapel is the Sacristy-Museum, which houses some of the most valuable belongings of the Catholic Monarchs. There are items of great historical value, such as gold, books and paintings. Visitors can get up close to the crown and scepter of Empress Isabel, various Flemish wooden panels (including works by Hans Memling), and even paintings by Sandro Botticelli and Pietro Perugino.
It is possible to visit the Royal Chapel every day, except Good Friday, December 25 and January 1. Visiting hours from Monday to Saturday are from 10:15 am to 6:30 pm, and on Sundays and holidays from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm.
