Things to do in Monserrate Palace
The Monserrate Palace is located not very far from the historic center of Sintra and it’s one of the most beautiful architectural and landscape Romantic creations in Portugal. It was classified World Heritage by UNESCO in 1995.
The palace was built on the site of a former chapel dedicated to the Lady of Monserrate which was devastated by the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. The design was influenced by Romanticism and Mudéjar Moorish Revival architecture with Gothic elements. It is surrounded by an imposing botanical garden with species from all over the world organized according to their geographic areas, reflecting the diverse origins of the plants and forming landscapes along the paths between ruins, recesses, lakes, and waterfalls.
