What to expect

Home to pristine lakes and pine-clad hills buried deep in the Bavarian Alps, Berchtesgaden is one good-looking German town. Visit this mountaintop retreat for epic views across the valley plus the chance to tour of its salt mines and Hitler's hideaway, 'The Eagle's Nest'.

Start with a journey through the awe-inspiring alpine countryside, and you'll pass an assortment of chocolate-box villages and fairytale towns nestled in lush green foothills – it promises to be a day of spectacular scenery.

One of Germany's highest peaks looms large over Berchtesgaden. But it's not just Mount Watzmann that impresses here – there are spectacular sights to see beneath the surface too. Enjoy free time or avail of optional tours, including a descent into a salt mine with a boat ride on an underground lake and a visit to 'The Eagle's Nest'. Once the mountain retreat of Adolf Hitler, there's a historical tour available or a beer garden serving up cold lager and wow-factor views of the Austrian border.

Well organised, very clear meeting instructions/timings. An interesting day; we extended the tour with a visit to the Eagle’s Nest, glad we did as otherwise it might have been a little too long in Berchtesgaden. Alistair was a great guide, providing just enough historical information delivered with a little humour here and there.

Guide Alastair and driver Peter were excellent. Enjoyed both the Eagles nest and Berchesgarden. The voucher NEEDS to say passports need to be taken and that the payment for Eagles Nest is ONLY in cash and no change given.

For us the trip was to see the views & learn about The Eagles Nest. The weather was so bad you couldn't see a thing. Eagles Nest was overcrowded & expensive. We were kept waiting for 50 mins for a coach to take us to the top, not acceptable. Our 1st guide Max was great, the 2nd George, was very loud & hard to understand as he held the microphone so close to his mouth. All in all a wash out. The town was nice but had we not done the Eagles Nest 5hrs would have been too long.

The weather was terrible beyond TUI control. No pickup from hotel 20 min walk reach way. Just a bus transfer really. 5 hrs in the town was too long. Pay extra for salt mines and eagles nest. Way over priced
